Trenchless Drain Lining Upgrade in a Multi-Building Housing Authority

The Problem

The maintenance supervisor at this location faced frequent sewage backups due to deteriorating cast iron pipe and root intrusion. They wanted to avoid an invasive solution, such as a traditional repair, due to repeated disruption to, or moving the tenant to a different location and decided on a less disruptive non-invasive solution.

The Process

Cleaned the pipe with mechanically rotating chains and heavy grit sandpaper. Multiple felt liners were measured, coated in epoxy resin, and inserted into the old pipe using a pull-in-place method. Each liner was inflated and cured (hardened) using ambient curing techniques or UV light assisted curing forming new, durable pipes inside the old ones. This process allowed tenants to be fully operational at the end of each day.

The Solution

Our trenchless lining team worked with the housing authority engineering firm and HUD to ensure proper planning for minimal disruption. Utilized exterior cleanout access points, roof vents, and toilet flanges to clean and install NuFlow structural liners eliminating the need to dig trenches.

Outcomes

The deteriorating pipes were fully repaired without any excavation and very little disruption to the tenants, restoring full flow with a lifespan potentially exceeding 50 years.
